Understanding your next steps

How we can help

Read the policy and decision together

The policy schedule, wording, exclusions and claim correspondence all matter. We consider the reason given for refusal or reduction against the documents and facts.

Organise the claim evidence

Keep the original application, renewal information, reports, photographs and a record of losses. Tell us about any deadline for responding or providing further material.

Consider the complaint route

An internal complaint or, where eligible, the Financial Ombudsman Service may offer a route without court proceedings. We can explain the options and whether paid legal advice is proportionate.

A clear way forward

What happens next

  1. What to have ready

Send the complete policy and schedule, claim form, insurer’s decision and any expert reports. Include the final response to a complaint if one has been issued.

  2. Your next step

Tell us the type of cover, amount disputed and current stage. We can discuss a document review and the next step, including any available complaint process.

Fees and timescales

01 / Fees

What the costs cover

A policy review, help with a complaint and court representation have different costs. We agree the scope, our fee and VAT first. If a free ombudsman process is available, we explain that option so you can consider whether paid assistance is worthwhile.

02 / Timescales

Timing and deadlines

Policy notification terms, complaint deadlines and court time limits can differ. A complaint does not necessarily protect a court deadline, so have the dates checked.

Your questions, answered

Must I go to court if a claim is refused?

No. The insurer’s complaints process and an eligible ombudsman complaint may be available. The appropriate route depends on the policy and dispute.

Do I need a solicitor for the Financial Ombudsman?

You can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service yourself. We can discuss whether legal advice would add value in your particular circumstances.

Can you review a reduced offer?

Yes. Provide the calculation, policy wording and evidence of your loss so we can assess the issue and the scope of advice needed.

Will my policy cover the legal costs?

Some policies include legal expenses cover, subject to terms and approval. Check it before instructing paid work and tell us what the insurer has agreed.
